MYST Asian Fusion
During a visit with MYST Asian Fusion, we had the opportunity to connect with COO Adam Yu and learn more about the story behind one of Burnaby’s most recognizable and growing culinary brands. What began as a single restaurant rooted in a passion for Taiwanese cuisine has steadily evolved into a multi-location concept known for its creativity, consistency, and strong connection to the community.Â
MYST Asian Fusion was first established in Burnaby with a clear vision: to introduce authentic Taiwanese flavours to the local community through a modern, elevated dining experience. Rather than simply replicating traditional dishes, the team set out to reinterpret them, preserving the comfort and familiarity of Taiwanese food while incorporating contemporary techniques and presentation. This balance of nostalgia and innovation continues to define the MYST experience today.Â
From its Burnaby origins, MYST has expanded across the Lower Mainland, with an additional location in Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighbourhood and new concepts currently under development in Langley and Richmond. Their upcoming Richmond concept, Taiwan Bento 101, reflects the brand’s continued commitment to evolving how Taiwanese cuisine is experienced, offering both convenience and quality in a new format. Each new location builds on the same foundation: high-quality food, thoughtful service, and a welcoming atmosphere for a diverse customer base.Â
Culinary Experience
At the heart of MYST’s success is its culinary philosophy. The menu brings together Taiwanese night market classics, regional Asian influences, and modern fusion dishes designed to appeal to a wide range of tastes. Guests can enjoy everything from handcrafted beverages and breakfast offerings to hearty dinners and late-night snacks. Signature dishes such as beef noodle soup and salt & pepper popcorn chicken are reimagined with refined techniques, while seasonal dishes keep the menu fresh and dynamic.Â
This culinary direction is led by Chef Wen-Min Chen and Chef Zhao-Hui Liang, whose combined expertise brings depth and creativity to the kitchen. Chef Wen-Min draws inspiration from Taipei’s vibrant night markets, elevating familiar street food into thoughtfully crafted dishes using seasonal ingredients. Chef Zhao-Hui, trained in top-tier kitchens, contributes refined Cantonese techniques that enhance both flavour and presentation. Together, they create a menu that feels both authentic and forward-thinking,.Â
Behind the scenes, MYST places a strong emphasis on consistency and operational excellence. A centralized kitchen and standardized procedures ensure that quality remains high across all locations, while allowing the team to scale efficiently as they grow. At the same time, each restaurant maintains a warm, approachable environment designed to welcome families, students, and professionals. This balance of structure and hospitality has been key to building a loyal and diverse customer base.Â
Community Contributions
Beyond its culinary offerings, MYST Asian Fusion has also made meaningful contributions to the local community. As the business has expanded, it has created employment opportunities for students, newcomers, and individuals building careers in Canada’s hospitality industry. The organization invests in structured training and clear development pathways, helping team members grow into leadership roles and long-term careers.Â
MYST also prioritizes working with local suppliers and partners, sourcing ingredients and services from businesses across the region. From produce and packaging to construction and logistics, these partnerships help strengthen the local economy while maintaining quality and reliability in their operations.Â
Community engagement is another important part of the MYST story. The team regularly participates in holiday initiatives and cultural celebrations, including Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival events, and has supported local organizations through food donations and event partnerships. Their collaborations with post-secondary institutions such as SFU, UBC and Langara reflect an ongoing commitment to supporting students and fostering connections with the next generation of professionals.Â
Equally important is MYST’s role in promoting Taiwanese culture within the broader Canadian landscape. Through its menu, events, and storytelling, the brand introduces guests to the richness and diversity of Taiwanese cuisine, helping to build cultural awareness and appreciation. This cultural representation is not only central to their identity but also resonates strongly within Burnaby’s diverse and multicultural community.Â
As MYST Asian Fusion continues to grow, its leadership remains grounded in the communities it serves, viewing each new location not simply as expansion but as an opportunity to enhance neighbourhood vibrancy, support local businesses, and create welcoming spaces for connection. From its beginnings as a single Burnaby restaurant to a recognized regional brand, MYST’s journey reflects a strong entrepreneurial vision paired with a deep commitment to culture, community, and sharing the warmth and flavours of Taiwanese cuisine across the Lower Mainland.Â
