Two BBOT Members Bring Major Investments and Hundreds of Jobs to Burnaby

Burnaby is seeing significant investment in its life sciences sector, with two BBOT members, Kardium Inc. and Evonik Canada Inc., expanding their operations and bringing new jobs and opportunities to the community.

Burnaby-based medical device company Kardium is receiving up to $31.25 million in federal funding through the Strategic Response Fund to support a $125 million expansion of its local manufacturing operations. The investment is expected to create and maintain approximately 1,000 high-skilled jobs in B.C. and expand Kardium’s cleanroom production capacity from 500 units a year to 30,000.

“Investments of this scale are a strong signal of what is happening in Burnaby,” said Angie Whitfield, President & CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade.

“Kardium and Evonik are not only creating hundreds of highly skilled jobs, but they are also building world-class innovation and advanced manufacturing capacity right here in our community.

“This is exactly the kind of investment we want to see more of — companies choosing Burnaby to grow, innovate and compete globally. We’re incredibly proud to have both organizations as BBOT members and to see their continued success contributing to Burnaby’s economy.”

Kardium is best known for its Globe Pulsed Field System, a medical device that treats atrial fibrillation. The company received Health Canada approval for the system last month, following U.S. FDA approval in 2025.

Evonik Canada Inc. is also expanding its Burnaby operations, with $68 million in federal funding supporting a more than $150 million investment. The project will establish a Nucleic Acid Competence Centre focused on developing and manufacturing next-generation mRNA vaccines and therapies and is expected to create 260 jobs in B.C.

Together, the investments represent more than $275 million in new investment and the creation and support of more than 1,200 high-skilled jobs. They are a strong example of the innovation and investment taking place in Burnaby and the important role the city continues to play in B.C.’s life sciences sector.

BBOT is proud to have Kardium and Evonik as members and looks forward to seeing their continued growth and contributions to Burnaby’s economy.
