Federal Election Results: Liberal Sweep in Burnaby, Carney to Lead Minority Government
Canada has elected Mark Carney to be Prime Minister, with his Liberal Party projected to form a minority government following yesterday’s federal election. In a historic shift, Burnaby saw a full Liberal sweep across all federal ridings, marking a significant political realignment in a region long considered an NDP stronghold.
Incumbent MP Terry Beech secured his fourth consecutive win in Burnaby North–Seymour—an impressive achievement that reflects strong support in his riding and his continued presence as a key representative for Burnaby in Ottawa. The Burnaby Board of Trade congratulates Beech on this milestone victory.
The BBOT also congratulates the newly elected Members of Parliament: Wade Chang in Burnaby Central, Gregor Robertson in Vancouver-Fraserview–Burnaby, and Jake Sawatzky in New Westminster–Burnaby—Maillardville.
These wins represent a major political transition for the Burnaby region. Longtime NDP MP Peter Julian, who had represented New Westminster–Burnaby–Maillardville since 2004, was unseated by Sawatzky.
In Burnaby Central, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh lost his seat to Wade Chang after serving as MP since 2019. Singh has since announced that he will be stepping down as party leader, further underscoring the significance of this election.
