Burnaby Board of Trade official statement in response to the U.S. decision to impose tariffs
February 1, 2025
“The U.S. decision to impose tariffs on Canadian goods is incredibly disappointing and will have immediate, real-world consequences for businesses, workers, and families on both sides of the border. These tariffs will drive up costs on everyday essentials, disrupt supply chains, and create uncertainty at a time when stability is more important than ever. Simply put, no one wins in a trade war.
Canada has been a reliable and trusted trading partner to the U.S. for decades. Our economies aren’t just connected; they’re deeply intertwined. From the materials that fuel North American auto manufacturing to the potash that supports agriculture, Canada plays a key role in keeping industries moving and costs down for businesses and consumers alike.
If the goal is economic strength and lower costs, then working together—not against each other—should be the only path forward. These tariffs do the opposite, making it harder for businesses to plan, invest, and grow. Ultimately, those higher costs will hit consumers the hardest.
As the economic development partner for the City of Burnaby and the voice of our business community, the Burnaby Board of Trade urges a strong, coordinated government response to protect our businesses and workers. At the same time, Canada must focus on strengthening its own economic foundation, supporting businesses, expanding trade opportunities, and removing barriers to growth. A strong, united, and competitive Canadian economy will succeed, no matter the challenges we face."
The Burnaby Board of Trade will continue to advocate for our business community and push for solutions that bring stability, certainty, and opportunity for businesses in Burnaby and beyond.
